Is avocado a fruit or a vegetable? It is actually a tropical fruit but like a few other fruits such as the tomato and the plantain, it is eaten as vegetable, commonly finding its way into salads, dips and as an accompaniment for Mexican dishes. However,
It just so happens that this rich tasting, creamy fleshed fruit is marvelous grilled - like almost any other food, which is terrific all by itself, it seems that the only way to improve on it is to fire up the grill! While raw avocado will always have a place in many recipes and as a snack on its own, grilled avocado is something special, which you will want to add to your salads and other dishes. This simple avocado recipe is a unique way to enjoy this wonderful fruit and makes a great side dish for spicy grilled dishes.
Ingredients -
2 avocados (very slightly unripe is best, since firm avocado will hold up best to grilling)
1 lime
Olive oil
Salt, black pepper and/or chili powder, to taste
Preparation:
Preparing grilled avocado is a snap; cut your avocados into halves, removing the large pits.
Quarter your lime and squeeze the juice of ¼ lime over each avocado half.
This will prevent the flesh from turning brown while you wait for the grill to get hot enough, as well as lend a little bright citrus flavor to your avocados.
Brush each half with olive oil, and then sprinkle with salt, pepper, and/or chili powder. Grill the avocados cut side down on a hot grill for about 3 minutes.
You can serve them as they are, or slice and peel for salads and as a delicious garnish.
No matter how you serve it, grilled avocado is certain to be a hit at your table.
