Vegetarian Pizza alla Bismarck

Pizza alla Bismarck is an unusual pizza, which is growing in popularity. So, what is pizza alla Bismarck? This pizza has an egg cracked over it so the egg fries on top of the pizza and comes out sunny-side-up. There are different types of pizza alla Bismarck because fried egg goes well with so many different ingredients. You might like to add chicken, ham, or sausage or keep things vegetarian by using your favorite vegetables instead.

The following pizza alla Bismarck is topped with mushrooms and three kinds of cheese. The pizzas are made individually but if you want to make larger pizzas that is also fine. It is up to you how many eggs you use if you are making one large one. Everybody will want some egg on their piece of pizza, which is why it is probably simpler just to make the individual ones.

The fried egg on top of this pizza is really popular in Australia and in some other countries too. You can fry the egg separately and transfer it to the cooked pizza using a slotted spoon rather than cook it on the pizza if you want to.

Unusual Pizza with Mushrooms and Egg

Ingredients -

1 tablespoon honey
1 ¼ cups warm water
2 teaspoons salt
½ cup plus 3 tablespoons olive oil
4 cups all purpose flour
2 packages dry yeast
½ lb sliced goat cheese
1 lb shredded mozzarella
1 thinly sliced red onion
½ lb grated Italian Fontina cheese
6 small eggs
Cornmeal, as needed
Crushed red pepper flakes, to taste

Preparation:

Combine the yeast, water, honey, and 3 tablespoons of the olive oil in an electric mixer bowl.

Add 3 cups of the flour and the salt and mix, using a dough hook.

Add enough of the remaining flour to form a soft dough.

Knead the dough on a low speed until it is smooth, sprinkling in more flour if necessary.

This will take about 10 minutes.

Knead the dough by hand on a floured board until it is elastic and smooth.

Put it in a greased bowl and turn it a few times to cover it in oil.

Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let it sit at room temperature for half an hour.

Divide it into 6 pieces and roll each one into a ball. Put the balls on a baking sheet.

Cover them with a damp kitchen towel. Let the balls sit for 10 minutes.

You can use them now or refrigerate them for up to 4 hours.

If you chill it, take it out of the refrigerator half an hour before proceeding with the recipe, to let it reach room temperature.

Sprinkle cornmeal over 3 baking sheets.

Stretch each ball into an 8 inch disk and put 2 on each baking sheet.

Cook the pizzas on 1 side for 1 minute, on a hot grill.

Turn them over and brush the remaining olive oil over them.

Add the goat cheese, Fontina, mozzarella, mushrooms, and red onion.

Crack an egg on to each pizza and drizzle a couple of drops of olive oil over the top.

Put the grill lid down and cook for 4 minutes or until the toppings are done and the eggs are set.
