Some speculate that Marinades have been around since the early 1800s, however, if you look into individual customs marinades have been around longer than that. Marinades have been used since early Egyptian times when they prepared their meat for cooking. The use of Marinating Vegetables has not been around that long, but its history is rich with flavor and marinating has stood the test of time.

Where Marinades Come From and Their Roots, How Different Cultures Use Them?

Japan and other Asian cultures have been using marinades for hundreds of years and one of the first was the Soy Sauce that has changed some throughout time, but is still a favorite. The French have been using Marinades since the 14th Century, and the word Marinade Derives from Italian "marinare," which means to use fluid to pickle fish. Mexico has its own history with Marinades as well; from before Columbus they have been using Papaya to tenderize their foods, which is now available on the market.

When it comes to the U.S. itself Marinades have been bottled since the 19th century however the actual time when marinades where first used here, can only be guessed at for no one knows for sure. When you consider that we are a mix of several different cultures our history has to be rich and long as well.

What Marks a Great Marinade?

The true markings of a great marinade can be found in the quality of ingredients and how well they blend together. You can also mark a great Marinade by how well it tenderizes the meat or vegetable also by how much flavor of the marinade carries through complementing the food.

When you look into the actual history of Marinating Vegetables, you can find references to Roman Times. During this time, the vegetables and other foods served with them were considered appetizers yet by today’s standards these would actually be the main course. The process of Marinating Vegetables has affected even Russia. In the early 19th century, they were used as appetizers called zakuski, which would be served buffet style, and in a separate room of the home from the actual dinner.

The Ingredients in each Marinade have been influenced not only by their origin but also by the actual cooks themselves. When you look at any, of the different countries, they have spices and ingredients native to them and these will be most prominently used there.
